How search engines work...
Search engines do NOT find results by searching the internet itself. When you use a search engine you are searching through that search engine's database of websites.
Some search engines (such as excite) use special software that roams automatically across the web recording details of sites and pages back to the database. Although search engines of this type can be very powerful, they are best used for specific pieces of information.
For more general subject research another type of search engine - the web directory or index (such as Yahoo!) - may be better. A web directory's database is usually maintained and edited by people who organise web pages and subjects within the database.
